The Olympic Spirit - ”Citius, Altius, Fortius”
Faster, higher and stronger is the motto of the Olympic Games and this text was originally carved in the stone of the main entrance to the arena of the Ancient Greek Olympic Games. This can still be seen as the main guideline for all the competitors in the modern Olympic Games since they have all been striving for many years to become faster, higher and stronger. This is a very beautiful thought and very appealing to me.
All these men and women who have paid such a high price to become what they have become. They have made huge sacrifices in their lives and finally they are about to get their reward. For days and nights, weeks, months and years they have been struggling to reach the goal of their lives, to fulfil their dream. I think this is so well expressed in the lyrics of the official Olympic song of Sydney:
“I am my own believer, In my heart the reason, I will follow the light from within, I’m not afraid of weakness, I’m going to taste the sweetness, Of the power not to give in, Oh I will see it through, I believe this is my moment of truth.
I will go the distance, Embrace resistance, I will lay my soul on the line, When the wait is over, And the hunger has spoken, If I give my all, I will shine, Oh I will see it through, I believe, this is my moment of truth”.
We don’t have to be athletes to have dreams to fulfil or goals to reach. The motto “Faster, Higher, Stronger” can still be a useful guideline for all of us. If we do our very best in whatever we do, then we can reach glory and recognition. As some people have said: “The journey was worth the pain and we found that the journey was the true goal”. They meant that it was the process of reaching the goal that gave them the most.
For me it has been really important to have very clear and distinct goals in my life. This has made me focused and helped me to be more disciplined. When I was studying at the comprehensive upper secondary school I made up my mind up to strive to become a politician in order to enhance social change. I said to myself that one day I would become a successful member of the diplomatic corps or a successful politician. Today I have somehow reached that goal and I have started wondering about my next goal. So, I have a lot of thinking to do now.
Have you ever paid any attention to the goals of your own life? Just take some moments of your life and think about what you are striving for. This can help you to become Faster, Higher and Stronger!
